The Leilehua Mules potent ground game led by Cameron Keeves pounded out a 31-8 win over the Pearl City Chargers last night at Pearl City High School’s Edwin Bino Neves Stadium. It was the regular season OIA Division I finale for both teams as the Mules finished with a record of 6-1 league, 7-3 overall, and the Chargers, possibly for the first time in Charger football history, finished winless at 0-7 league, 0-9 overall.
Pearl City didn’t look like a winless ball club threatening to score on their opening drive but fell short in the red zone on the Mules eight-yard line. The Chargers outgained the Mules through the air 273-88. Charger QB Jonah Galanto completed 17-37 passes for 192 yards. QB Ikaika Torres completed 7-10 passes for 81 yards and a TD. Leilehua QB Bennett Strobel completed 6-10 passes for 88 yards and 2 TD’s.
The Leilehua ground game made a big an impact on the finals score with Mules outgaining the Chargers in net rushing 287-13. The Mules scored 28 points in the first half but were held to three points in the second half. The Chargers got on the scoreboard late in the third quarter on a 28-yard touchdown pass from QB Ikaika Torres to WR Javian Mizuno. The Chargers scored on a two-point conversion pass from Torres to Keaton Tomas to trail the Mules 28-8. Leilehua kicker Rodel Alano pumped through a 40-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter to score the Mules only points of the second half that increased their lead to 31-8 which was the final score.
A trio of Pearl City receivers put up decent numbers in the ball game: Keaton Tomas 5 catches for 86 yards; Javian Mizuno 7 catches for 75 yards and a TD; Tayvon Ching-Harrell 6 catches 74 yards.
Leilehua Mules WR Talon Tarpley caught 5 passes for 79 yards and a TD.
The Chargers also bid Alaiha to a very special group of Charger Seniors representing both the Football and Cheer Teams.
