Pearl City Waiau Seniors Club

Jan 30, 2012 | Heart and Soul

When you look into the positive elements that make up the key ingredients to our successful and thriving Pearl City community, it starts with a group of volunteers who have been serving our residents and their families for decades. The Pearl City Waiau Seniors Club gives their "Heart & Soul" to every community project they touch.

Waiau Seniors Club members gather for a group photo at Waiau District Park during their weekly club meeting on Monday, January 30, 2012.

Members of the Waiau Seniors Club meet on Monday's from 9:30am to 11:00am at the Waiau District Park community hall to work on special projects and plan for their next volunteer event. They also schedule special monthly guest speakers to address the club membership on issues that affect the community.

The Waiau Seniors Club can be seen in volunteering in our Pearl City community as well as helping out in other communities on Oahu. Each year, the group joins senior groups from District 3 to string thousands of leis for Memorial Day. The leis are sent to our Memorial Parks on Oahu to be placed on the graves of our country's fallen heroes by Hawaii Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Another community project that the Waiau Seniors Club participates in is the annual Easter Egg Hunt held at Waiau District Park. The Honolulu City & County Parks and Recreation Department presents the annual Easter Egg Hunt along with generous community and business sponsors. A couple hundred kids participate each year.

"We enjoy helping out at the Easter Egg Hunt at the Waiau District Park," said Waiau Seniors Club President Mary Takeshita. "It's one of our biggest projects every year."

The Waiau Seniors Club also donated their Christmas craft making skills during the Holiday Season to benefit the Pearl City Nursing Home.

"Last December we donated 100 gingerbread ornaments for the residents at the Pearl City Nursing Home, Takeshita said. "They were completely hand made by the Waiau Seniors. It took a couple months to complete the project led by Ernelle Lum. They were very appreciative and commented how well the gingerbread  ornaments were made. It was one of the community service projects that we did last year."

Most recently, volunteers from the Waiau Seniors Club helped decorate the Pearl City Highlands Elementary School cafeteria for the annual Pearl City Community Association's Installation/Appreciation Dinner that was held on Saturday, January 28, 2012.

The Waiau Seniors Club keep themselves busy and connected to their community and its residents. They are all true treasures in our Pearl City community. We are proud and honored to recognize their endless dedication, love and support.
