Celebrate Arbor Day by planting a free tree or shrub. You can select from among popular native plants, fruit trees, spice plants, and flowering shrubs at the Hawaiian Electric Arbor Day Tree Giveaway, on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Featured this year for the first time are dwarf bottle brush, gardenia Kula, hanging red hibiscus, ‘ilima Kula, māmaki, miracle berry, tea, and white Kadota fig. In addition to these eight plants, there will be 13 others to choose from.
Arborists and master gardeners will be on hand to answer your gardening questions, and you’ll receive a free tree-planting guide.
The giveaway takes place at six locations across O‘ahu. Luckily, you can go to your neighborhood U.H. Urban Garden Center, at 955 Kamehameha Highway, where the giveaway starts at 7 a.m.
Be sure to line up early to get your favorite plant. And remember, the plants are given away one per family.
After you’ve picked out your free tree or shrub, go to the Urban Garden Center’s plant sale. They’re economical to buy, and the proceeds support the great work the staff and volunteers at the Urban Garden Center do.
The Hawaiian Electric Arbor Day Tree Giveaway is presented to you by these partners: Hawaiian Electric, Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program, U.H. Urban Garden Center, Wahiawā Botanical Garden, and Waimea Valley.
For information on the plants and all the giveaway locations, go to www.arbordayhawaii.org, or call Hawaiian Electric at 543-7511.
