Kailua spoiled Pearl City's undefeated season and run for an OIA Championship after shocking the Chargers 9-3 last night in the OIA championship tournament semifinals played at Hans L 'Orange Park in Waipahu.
The Chargers took a 3-2 lead after six complete innings and were three outs away from reaching Saturday's OIA championship game when the Surfriders blew the game wide open in the top of the seventh inning scoring seven runs (aided by four errors and a wild pitch) to take a 9-3 lead.
Kailua held Pearl City scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to stop the top ranked Chargers and earn a trip to tonight's championship game against Kalani. Kalani defeated Waipahu 3-2 last night to advance to the championship title game.
Dalton Kalama earned the win for the Surfriders. Trenton Darley took the loss for the Chargers.
Pearl City starting pitcher Carson Okada pitched three innings allowing no runs, two hits with two strikeouts and no walks Okada left the game in the top of the third inning after recording the final out on a line drive back to the mound but was injured after taking a shot to the head on the play. Trestan Nakamura pitched an inning in relief of Okada allowing two runs and three hits. Trenton Darley pitched three innings in relief allowing seven runs, four hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
Keiki Kanahele-Santos got the start for the Surfriders pitching three innings allowing one run, two hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Matthew Hanano tossed two innings in relief of Kanahele-Santos allowing one run, three hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Winning pitcher Dalton Kalama pitched two innings allowing one run, one hit with three strikeouts and three walks.
The Chargers will take on Waipahu this afternoon at Pearl City High School for third place. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm. Pearl City and Waipahu each earned a birth in the HHSAA State Divsion I Baseball Championship Tournament schedued for May 4 – May 7 at Maui's Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku.
