Hawaiian Electric Company continued their support for communities on Oahu with their recent contribution of a $15,000 grant to help fund the non-profit organization Na Kama Kai and their Ocean Safety and Conservation Awareness Clinics that are free to underprivileged youth on Oahu.

“These free clinics promote cultural knowledge and environmental responsibility to underprivileged youth and are held at various locations around Oʻahu including Waikīkī, Pokaʻi Bay, Ewa Beach Park, Waimānalo Beach Park, Kahana Bay and Haleʻiwa Beach Park,” said Duane DeSoto, Nā Kama Kai founder and professional surfer. “Our clinics are usually filled to capacity, and we appreciate the Hawaiian Electric grant which will allow us to expand and reach a greater number of keiki across the island.”

Over 6500 children have participated in Na Kama Kai programs since it began in 2008. Along with being taught ocean safety skills, the children also have the opportunity to learn traditional surfboard shaping, stand up paddling and canoe activities, as well as  stewardship and conservation.

The free Na Kama Kai two-hour Ocean Safety and Conservation Awareness Clinics are open to youth ages 2-18 years with clinics being held on the second Sunday of every month.
