The Pearl City High School Boys and Girls Air Riflery teams are on target for another run at repeating as OIA Champions in 2013. Coach Lester Aranaydo is leading his Chargers once again in that direction. Both teams are 3-0 in the 2013 OIA Red Western Division regular season.
While the boy’s team is in the rebuilding mode, the task ahead is a big one. The Chargers pulled off a three-peat last year after capturing their third OIA Team Championship in a row. With their sights set on a fourth OIA Championship, the team is off to a good start.
"This year’s team for the boys is kind of rebuilding, “said Coach Aranaydo. "Majority of our top shooters graduated. With the boys it's a challenge, but they're doing well. They beat Leilehua which is one of the top schools. That was really good for the boys. So, hopefully they continue on when it comes to the OIA."
The girl’s team is young, but entered the 2013 season with many of their top shooters returning with a year of experience and an OIA Championship notched into their belts. Actually, the girls are shooting for a three-peat this season after winning OIA Team Championship titles in 2011 and 2012.
"The girls team we're kind of returning all the top shooters from last year," Aranaydo said. "The girls’ team is pretty solid. We have a really good chance to win the girls side. The boys side we'll see what happens. Lots of experience on the girls’ side and pretty much a young team. Mostly freshmen and sophomores that's on the team. But it's a good returning team."
The Chargers are counting on their top shooters to lead the way in 2013.
"On the boys team are top shooters are Rayden Relacion and Cameron Kon. With the girls it's kind of hard to tell because the girls kind of switch off. Right now in sense of scoring it would be Ashley Somera who is a senior. Team wise we really have a good balance. It's a matter of them putting it together, well, at the same time. We have a really competitive team, boys and girls."
Coach Aranaydo and his Chargers will once again host the OIA Semifinals and Championship at their Pearl City High School shooting range facility in October.
'"We're having the OIA Championships here again which will be split into two days. On October 5th we will have the OIA Semifinals here. The top two teams, East and West will go into a play-off. The winner goes on to the following Saturday, October 12 into the championship. Individual shooters from all the schools who qualify will also shoot here too.”
A top shooting range facility such as the PCHS shooting range offers Coach Aranaydo the opportunity to provide a great venue to host the OIA Championships. It's also nice to be at home for the championships as well.
"It's nice shooting at home. Facility wise, among the OIA, we have a pretty good facility. That's why it's always here."
Pearl City returns to the PCHS range to take on Campbell on Wednesday, September 18, 2013.
