The Pearl City Chargers football team is hitting full stride in the Roosevelt High School Summer Pass League Tournament. On Tuesday, July 12, 2011 the Chargers looked impressive in their 47-25 win over St. Louis at Roosevelt High School.
They have performed well against ILH and OIA opponents that they have faced so far this summer.
"We went up on Kamehameha 5-1, Damien about the same," said Pearl City Chargers Head Coach, Kai Kamaka. "We also played pretty good against Kailua yesterday and we also beat Pac-5 in the first week 29-6 and Kaiser, our Thursday game, 32-7 and we have St. Louis today."
The Chargers find themselves breaking in a couple young and talented QB's after losing Dustin Bataya and Isaac Shim to graduation.
"Our two young quarterbacks both have different strengths," Kamaka said. "Kaimi Paredes is the runner, more of the athletic type. Brock Teixeira is our pocket passer and our reader."
Paredes and Teixeira will have a deep core of experienced receivers to throw the ball to when the regular OIA season opens in late August.
"Our receiving core is just ridiculous." said Kamaka on the depth of available and experienced receivers for 2011. "We're stacked. Diacorri Briscoe, Shawn Lopez, Airick Pelen, Tyler Yamamoto are all returning. Also, Joe Hammond a new addition, came out from basketball. He's a big kid. Right now we don't have a first team. You'll see today, we're platooning."
In the trenches, on both sides of the ball, the Chargers have brought size with experience to the 2011 campaign.
"We're fortunate to get some guys who came in," Kamaka said. "We're really good size this year and have a really experienced line. You'll see a really big change in our run game too when we change it up a little bit. We'll be running some of the west gun to strengthen the pass."
So far, the Chargers continue to improve during the 2011 7 on 7 Roosevelt High School Pass League Tournament as they defend their 2010 title.
Next game for the Chargers is scheduled for Thursday, July 14 against Roosevelt at Roosevelt. Kick off is set for 5:00pm. The Chargers will catch a bye next Tuesday (7/19) with the play-offs scheduled for Thursday (7/21) and the championship on Saturday 7/23.
The 2011 pre-season and regular season is rapidly approaching with full pads practice right around the corner.
"We start Monday (7/25) with helmets," Kamaka said. "The following week on August 4 we got Waianae, we scrimmage Waianae at Waianae. On August 5, Damien comes to us, and on August 6 we go to Radford."
Pearl City will open the pre-season on August 12 with a road game against Kapolei. The Chargers will open their OIA White Division regular season on August 19 against Anuenue at home.
