Its called the Laulima I Makaukau Na Keiki (Working Together to prepare the Children) Smaller Learning Communities (SLC) Grant Consortium.
An Advisory Council has been formed to serve the Laulima I Makaukau Na Keiki (SLC) Grant that represents five Hawaii high schools on three islands, along with representatives from industry, postsecondary institutions, community leaders, education, or Consortium schools.
The first Advisory Council Member meeting was held on Tuesday, June 13, 2011 at the McKinley High School Library. The Advisory Council will meet on a quarterly basis. Members of the Advisory Council receive no compensation for their services as Advisory Council members. Membership will be for the duration of the SLC consortium.
Barry Villamil from MyPearlCity.com was recommended by Pearl City High School Principal, Carlyn Fujimoto to serve as a community representative on the Advisory Council. Also, representing Pearl City High School on the Advisory Council as Advisory Council Members are; Ernell Hallaman (Curriculum Coordinator), and Judi Morton (SLC Coordinator).

PURPOSE:
The Advisory Council will function in an advisory capacity to the schools in the Laulima I Makaukau Na Keiki SLC Grant. The Advisory Council makes recommendations regarding the expansion of grant programs and budget. The Advisory Council assists with functions such as raising funds, securing internships and scholarships, and providing in-kind contributions to the grant schools.
Lastly, the Advisory Council is an integral part of the experiential learning activities for all grants school students; bridging the gap between the classroom and the "real world".
OBJECTIVES:
The objective of the Advisory Council is to support the goals of the Laulima I Makaukau Na Keiki SLC grant:
1. Provide academic and student interventions to transition students into high school.
2. Create and expand Smaller learning Community strategies and structures in order to strengthen effective practices for student engagement.
3. Strengthen effective teaching and learning practices to improve student achievement and minimize achievement gaps in literacy, math, science and technology.
4. Prepare all students for college and career options after high school.
