Congratulations to the Pearl City Chargers who pulled off the most incredible comeback to down the Konawaena Wildcats of the BIIF in 5 sets in the quarterfinals of the HHSAA Division II Boys Volleyball State Championship Playoffs at St. Louis High School.
Konawaena Wildcats 20 22 25 26 10
Pearl City Chargers 25 25 20 24 15
After Pearl City took the first two sets, Konawaena got down to business and won the next two sets to set-up a winner-take all fifth set. The Wildcats exploded to take a 10-2 lead and seemed to be cruising towards Aloha ball and certain victory over the Chargers.
In all my years of covering high school volleyball, I have never seen or heard of any team rallying for 13 unanswered points and go on to victory, until last night. Pearl City did just that in dramatic fashion and with the win, the Chargers advanced to tonight’s semifinal round against #2 St. Louis. St. Louis swept Pahoa to advance to the semifinals.
Pearl City’s Fati Seei-Tofi was a force behind the Chargers victory over the Wildcats and led all scorers with an incredible 24 kills performance. 24 kills! Tylus Williams was stellar on defense recording 32 digs for the Chargers.
Konawaena’s Tevita Lavaka led the Wildcats with a strong 19 kills performance. Fabian Ruiz recorded 24 digs for the Wildcats.
Tomorrow’s semifinal match-ups at Kalani High School:
5:00pm – Nanakuli vs. Seabury
7:00pm – St. Louis vs. Pearl City
Winners advance to Saturday’s DII Championship at Blaisdell Arena with first set scheduled for 5:00pm. The DI Championship will follow at 7:00pm.
GO CHARGERS!
