The Lady Chargers are headed to the State Championship!
Sunshine Fontes kicked through the winning goal in the 22nd minute to defeat #2 Iolani 1-0 in the semifinals of the HHSAA Division 1 State Soccer Championships on Friday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Main Stadium. The win places the Lady Chargers in the state championship game against #4 Baldwin who advanced to the championship after turning back #1 Mililani 2-1 (2OT/PK) in the semifinal night cap.
Tonight's state championship match is scheduled for 7pm following the D2 state championship between Hawaii Prep and KS-Hawaii that kicks off at 5:00pm.
The Lady Chargers won their last state soccer championship crown back in 1997.
In the Lady Chargers semifinal win over Iolani last night, freshman sensation Sunshine Fontes scored on a cross from Daelenn Tokunaga.
""Daelenn dribbled down the sideline and then she crossed it, but the defender mishandled it and I was able to follow it." said Fontes.
Fontes is excited to be playing for the state championship, but wanted the win last night to honor the seniors and make it to the finals.
"It feels great because this is my first year on the team and we all wanted to play and this is for the seniors," Fontes said. "We were nervous, but we just wanted to play in the finals."
This is a very special group of Lady Chargers that features a mix of talented underclassmen, as well as seasoned veterans, and a coaching staff led by Lady Chargers Head Coach Frank Baumholtz who knows how to win while embracing and guiding his players as they achieve success on and off the field.
