Waipio captured the 2014 Hawaii Little League 9 & 10 District 7 Baseball Championship on Monday after defeating Pearl City 9-1 at Puuiki Field in Waialua.
Waipio went 4-0 in the double elimination championship tournament while Pearl City finished at 2-2. Both Pearl City losses were against Waipio, 14-1 and 9-1.
Waipio moves on to the state championship tournament to be played at the Aiea Annex Field on Thursday, June 26 through Saturday, June 28, 2014.
Trey Apana-Purcell earned the championship win for Waipio in 5 2/3 innings of work. Zach Tanabe pitched in relief of Apana-Purcell in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Mark Moreno got the start for Pearl City pitching 3 2/3 innings before being relieved by Joe Keo in the top of the fourth inning.
Congratulations to the newly crowned champions representing Waipio Little League! Good luck in the state tournament!
Also, congratulations to a well coached Pearl City ball club that earned their way to the championship game playing with heart, hard work, and humbleness throughout the tournament.
Maholo to Waialua Little League for a great job hosting the championship tournament and for providing an excellent venue to play, watch, and enjoy Little League baseball.
