Students and teachers from Pearl City High School's Health Services Pathway Program held their annual Health Fair on Friday, April 12, 2013 in the school gymnasium.
PCHS students manned health care related booths that filled the gymnasium floor on Friday.
The PCHS student body was invited to visit and learn from the many health care related themed booths that were presented with the purpose of helping to educate and bring awareness to health care related topics.
"We have different classes that are helping us to bring to light the health topics," said Courtney Matsumoto, PCHS Health Services Pathway teacher and co-coordinator of the 2013 Health Fair. "For example, how human physiology and health work together. So we're looking at pathologies, and we're showcasing different health careers. We also have the psychology classes which are highlighting topics dealing with mental health and awareness. The chemistry students are looking into how chemistry plays into the real world like how caffeine affects our body, or the chemistry in caffeine."
The annual PCHS Health Fair has returned after a one year absence. Event coordinators are proud of the fact that the Health Fair is basically run by the students with the message of educating the PCHS student body on health related topics and issues.
"This is our fifth year with the Health Care event," Matsumoto said. "We didn't do it last year. We try and do it every year but we took a break last year. We're trying it again this year and it's completely student led, student run. We're trying to get a lot of the students to figure out and see that health is everywhere. We're trying to connect that with a lot of topics."
"This year we didn't ask any community members to help us out because we're trying to do it on a smaller scale," Matsumoto commented with regard to community support for the event. "We want to figure out what we want o do with other teachers on campus and hopefully next year be able to expand so that we have other organizations. We do have Pearl City Urgent Care helping us out this year and also in the classroom as well. Other than that, there are no other organizations."
Working hard and working together proved to be the winning combination for the overwhelming success of this year's PCHS Health Fair event.
"It’s been a lot of hard work this past year working with the students," Matsumoto said. "They did a great job getting their projects together and also the other teachers helping to get everything ready because we all did a little bit to get this major project done. I think this is a pretty successful event because of the fact that we all kind of came together for this year's Health Fair instead of doing it with just our Health Services Pathway students."
Congratulations to all the PCHS Health Services Pathway students and their teachers for presenting a very informative and creative 2013 PCHS Health Fair.
Also, mahalo to the PCHS students who showcased their special talents while entertaining the crowd during the event.
Great Job!
