The Oahu Interscholastic Association named Pearl City Chargers Varsity Basketball Head Coach Lionel Villarmia as the OIA Red Western Division Coach of the Year. The announcement that was made on Friday by the OIA, also included five Chargers being named as all-star selections.
Coach Villarmia led his Chargers to a 9-1, runner-up, regular season record in the OIA Red Western Division and a berth in both the OIA Red Championship Tournament and the HHSAA State Basketball Championship Tournament.
The Chargers finished in sixth place in the OIA Red Tourney which earned the team a berth in the state championship tournament. The Chargers beat OIA Red Division runner-up Moanalua in the first round of the state championship tournament before losing to Big Island Champion and state tournament #4 seed Konawaena in the quarterfinals.
All five Chargers named as OIA all-stars are seniors. Each one played an integral role in the success of the Chargers 2012-2013 regular and post seasons.
